Asbestos Encapsulation
There are a number of factors that determine whether an asbestos containing material requires removal. It is however often safer and cheaper, to encapsulate an asbestos material, than to remove it. It is often necessary to undertake a thorough clean of the area should any asbestos debris be identified
Encapsulation involves the application of an impermeable but flexible paint like substance, or the covering of the material with a layer of other material such as plastic, scrim cloth or other such material. The aim of this practice is to stop the release of asbestos fibres which may be caused through vibrations, contact or simply as a result of age deterioration.
One of the main things to consider when chosing encapsulation, is that the original benefits of the asbestos material can still be retained in a safe manner. For example, if the asbestos containing material was originally installed to provide a fire resistant barrier, then the encapsulation of the product will continue to offer the same properties.
Encapsulation can be considered cheaper than removal because the technical requirements to undertake the task are often lower than for full licensed removal, and in the case of materials installed for a purpose (eg, fire protection) there is no need to reinstall an asbestos substitute later.

If damage has occurred removal may still not be required. Damaged ACMs can often be be encapsulated (painted), over clad or repaired in some way before the risk is sufficient to require removal.
